Forty-five years after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” speech, labor, civil rights and the faith community return to the Mason Temple Wednesday for a commemorative event honoring Dr. King and the 1,300 sanitation workers who showed courage and determination in their struggle for economic equality and social justice by striking with him.
AFSCME President Lee Saunders, King’s son, Martin Luther King III, Rev. Al Sharpton and NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous will join with other activists in an effort to reignite Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign.
AFSCME will host a panel discussion Wednesday night with Maria Elena Durazo, executive secretary-treasurer of the L.A. County Labor Federation; Van Jones, president and co-founder of Rebuild the Dream; U. S. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN); and Terry O’Neill president of the National Organization for Women.
The event will take place at the historic Mason Temple, located at 930 Mason Street in Memphis. The panel is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
