According to the most recent figures presented by the U.S. Census Bureau, northwest Atlanta suburb Alpharetta is now the sixth fastest growing city in the country.

Alpharetta was the only city in Georgia to make the Census Bureau’s list.

The latest Census Bureau information examines cities with a population of 50,000 and more in 2011 and 2012. Alpharetta saw its population rise by nearly 4.5 percent to about 62,000.

“Georgia, historically, has had some of the fastest-growing counties in the nation,” Dr. Roger Tutterow, an economics professor at Mercer University told WABE. “In Alpharetta’s case, I think, the advantage of having recognized, very good public schools, coupled with a very active recruitment of businesses to the area have made it a very attractive place to relocate to.”

Hewlett Packard announced in January that it would be adding an additional 200 jobs to its Alpharetta facility. HP curently employs about 800 workers in the Atlanta subrub.

The city also hosted First Lady Michelle Obama in 2011 at the city’s North Point Community Church for a stop on her “Let’s Move!” tour. She was welcomed there by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

The nation’s fastest-growing city is San Marcos, Texas.
