Clark Atlanta University (CAU) has signed a memorandum agreement with the Environmental Defense Fund for the Building Green Initiative. The Building Green Initiative was established at UNCF in 2010 to advance sustainability at historcally black colleges and universities (HBCUs) or minority-serving institutions (MSIs).
The initiative will transfer a grant from the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Special Programs Corporation to CAU to promote conservation and environmental protection at the university. The grant is funded by Wells Fargo.
“We are excited about the opportunity for Clark Atlanta University to lead this transition to a green economy,” said CAU President Carlton E. Brown. “The Building Green Initiative promotes interdisciplinary approaches to environmental studies and curriculum, while cultivating students to become global sustainability leaders.”
The Initiative is also working with the several U.S. agencies including the U.S. Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Interior to educated MSIs about business relations with the federal government.
“Already, major environmental organizations such as Eco-America and Momentus look to this collaboration for participation with historically black colleges and universities,” said Brown.
Additionally, a proposal is under review to create a state-of-the-art living, learning energy lab at CAU that would house the Clark Atlanta Center for Alternative, Renewable Energy, Technology and Training (CARET2).
Under CAU’s principal investigator, Dr. Olu Olatidoye, the Center would serve as an energy hub where engineers and scientists can engage in cutting-edge research, an incubator that contributes to commercialization, and a faculty network that supports collaboration between the Atlanta University Center and national laboratories.
