The Braves got two homeruns, a stolen base and an unearned run. Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jacob Turner threw in an intentional walk, an unintentional walk, an error and beaned Dan Uggla for good measure. And that was all in just the first inning.

All the action kept the Braves Waffle House winning streak rolling in impressive fashion as Brandon Beachy helped Atlanta to its 14th straight win. The Braves are now 71-45 and 39-15 at home.

Justin Upton got things started early. Batting second, the Braves big man took a 2-2 pitch out to left field for a solo shot, his 22nd of the season. The homer extended Upton’s hitting streak to 13 games, the fourth longest streak of his career and the longest since a 14-game run in 2011.

Not to be left out of the first inning action, Freddie Freeman and Brian McCann each reached base and were driven in by Chris Johnson. McCann’s run was unearned as he reached base on a fielding error charged to Donovan Solano, who also failed to tag Freeman out at second. Two pitches later Johnson laid into a whopper in the middle of the plate.

While the scoreboard will be more kind, Turner got beaten up pretty badly by the Braves. The 22 year old surrendered only five hits in five innings with five strikeouts, but was also charged with four earned runs, three walks and three homeruns.

Turner’s night was ended early, or right on time, in the fifth inning. Juan Pierre pinch hit for the struggling pitcher in the sixth.

Brandon Beachy, on the other hand, pitched lights-out, going eight innings and allowing only three hits and one run, with six strikeouts on 99 pitches. He threw 32 balls and 67 strikes. When Turner got the yank, having thrown 96 total pitches (43 balls and 53 strikes), Beachy hadn’t even crossed 70. The win is Beachy’s first of the season, giving Atlanta another undercover threat as they march toward the postseason.

The Braves went on to win the game, 5-0, with Scott Downs coming on in the ninth for Beachy. Luis Ayala closed the game out for the Braves, getting the game’s final two outs.

There were dueling Web Gem Top Plays from Braves super shortstop Andrelton Simmons and Miami’s Adeiny Hechavarria too.

Friday night’s 7:30 game time – with a first pitch temperature of 89 degrees – was a one-off for the series. Saturday night’s game against Miami is expected to start at 7:00 p.m and Sunday’s first pitch is expected at 1:30.
