The company behind the scheduled 2013 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Tip-Off Championship tournament announced today that the event scheduled for Nov. 8-11 at Philips Arena in Atlanta has been canceled.

Kevin Clayton, the founder of JumpBall and creator of the HBCU Tip-Off, said in a statement that “unforeseen circumstances” were the cause of the tournament’s cancelation, weeks before games were set to begin. The tournament was set to feature Division I and Division II teams from historically black colleges squaring off in Atlanta. In the statement Clayton said the tournament would be rescheduled to 2014.

Eight teams including Morehouse, Virginia Union Tuskegee and non-HBCU contender Wisconsin-Green Bay, among others, had accepted bids to play in the tournament.

The tournament would have marked the first time in the arena’s 14-year history that it hosted an HBCU basketball game.

“It is with regret, due to unforeseen circumstances we have to postpone the inaugural HBCU Tip-Off Championship scheduled for November 8-11, 2013 at Philips Arena. In order to maintain the ability to deliver our program now and in the future it became necessary to postpone until 2014,” Clayton said in a statement. “We remain committed to building awareness and support for the HBCU community, its student athletes and athletic programs.

We are extremely grateful to the City of Atlanta, Philips Arena, Georgia World Congress Center, our partners, sponsors, ticket purchasers, volunteers and alumni groups that share our vision. We will continue to update our website (www.hbcutipoff.com) as we prepare for the 2014 HBCU Tip-Off Championship.”
