Honoring Mother Has Ancient Roots
The history of Mother's Day is an ancient one. It is neither a recent phenomenon, as many people believe it to be, nor is it the creation of greeting card and gift marketers, as many cynics assume.
Mother's Day celebrations are first said to have taken place thousands of years ago. The ancient Greeks celebrated their annual spring festival in honor of Rhea, the mother of many gods and goddesses in the Greek mythology. Ancient Romans celebrated a spring festival by the name of Hilaria in honor of Cybele, a mother goddess, some 250 years before Christ was born.
Early Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday.
In the U.S. the efforts of 19th century writer and poet Julia Ward Howe and early 1900's activist Anna Jarvis are recognized for having started the tradition. Jarvis lobbied people in power and in Congress aggressively for a day of recognition for mothers.
As a result, on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
Since then Mother's Day has flourished. In fact, on the second Sunday of May telephone companies used to record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere called to honor and to express appreciation of their mothers, and it has become the most popular day of the year to dine out.

Suspected Serial Rapist Arrested in Duluth
A Duluth man is now facing several charges after being accused of raping at least five women in a vacant apartment.
Joseph Tyler Sivonda, 23, was taken into custody Thursday by Gwinnett County Police and is currently facing charges of rape, aggravated sodomy and armed robbery.
According to The AJC, Sivonda supposedly hired female escorts online and met them at a Northeast Atlanta apartment complex.
Police say the victims claim Sivonda pulled out a handgun and forced the women into a vacant unit where police he sexually assaulted them.
Sivonda is currently being held at the Gwinnett County Jail. Records do not state whether Sivonda has an attorney or not.

Shabazz Family Releases Statement on Death of Malcolm X's Grandson, Malcolm Shabazz
The family of Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of civil righs icon Malcolm X, who was reportedly killed in Mexico on Thursday, released a statement today. The news of his death was reported by New York’s Amsterdam News and confirmed by Terrie M. Williams, a family friend via Twitter.
Several reports around the circumstances of his death are still unconfirmed and the investigation of his death is ongoing. Calls have been made to the consulate general’s office in Tiajuana, Mexico, as well as an email seeking more information about his death.
The statement, attributed to the Shabazz family, detailed the family's grief over losing the 28-year-old activist. Read the statement in full below.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved El Hajj Malcolm El Shabazz. To all who knew him, he offered kindness, encouragement and hope for a better tomorrow.
Although his bright light and boundless potential are gone from this life, we are grateful that he now rests in peace in the arms of his grandparents and the safety of God. We will miss him.
With grateful hearts, we send sincerest appreciation to our supporters around the world for your tremendous outpouring of love and respect during our time of grief.

Morehouse College Hit With Lawsuit After 30-Year Diploma Dispute
Morehouse College is being sued by a man who said he graduated from the institution 33 years ago, but the college claims he never met graduation requirements.
Terry Boyd applied for a job in 2011 that would have paid him a $150,000 a year salary. Boyd was rejected the job after a background by his prospective employer discovered that Boyd's college degree was invalid.
"They said they had a problem verifying my graduation from Morehouse," Boyd told WSB-TV.
According to the college, Boyd failed an Organic Chemistry class in which his transcript shows he made a D, but Boyd was still allowed to take Chemistry 2 after apparently failing the class, which was a prerequisite.
Boyd claims he passed the class and his attorney Marsha Mignott believes someone changed his grade from a 'C' to a 'D'.
"How do you mail something like this to someone you're professing did not complete your requirements for graduation?" Mignott said. "Even if you're in high school you cannot take Algebra 2 unless you've completed Algebra 1."
Morehouse is now countersuing Boyd, saying he is in unlawful possession of a diploma it gave him 33 years ago.
"They can't have it back, I earned it," Boyd said. "I really feel disappointed in Morehouse as far as the administration is concerned."
The lawsuit is expected to head to court later this year.
