Powerball Jackpot Hits $260 Million; One Ga. Resident Wins $1 Million
For residents of Georgia, Illinois, Arizona and a number of other states who participate in the Powerball lottery, the jackpot has grown from $217 million to $260 million for Wednesday's drawing.
While no one matched all six numbers in the multi-state lottery drawing Saturday night, 13 tickets matched five numbers correctly, including one in Georgia, that entitles those winners to $1 million. That according to the Powerball website.
There were three tickets that added the Power Play to win $2 million. Of those three winners, one was from Colorado and the other two were from Illinois.
Wednesday’s estimated $260 million jackpot has a $161.1 million cash value. The Powerball prize started at $105.6 million at the beginning of the month and has more than doubled – and almost tripled – since no winners of the big prize have yet been announced.
The winning numbers that no one was able to hit on March 16 were 3, 7, 21, 44 and 53. The Powerball was 16.
The odds of winning the jackpot are less than 1 in 175 million, according to Powerball’s site.
Wednesday night’s live drawing will take place at 11 p.m. only and in Atlanta will be televised on Channel 2, right before the 11 p.m. news.

NAACP Delegation Meets With Government and Civil Society Leaders in Haiti
Last week, a NAACP delegation led by Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors, met with Haitian President Michel Martelly to discuss key civil rights issues including education, health care, and economic sustainability.
The NAACP's delegation which included Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley, Chair NAACP International Affairs Committee; Kamilia Landrum, Youth Representative, NAACP National Board of Directors, NAACP Chief Operating Officer & Chief of Staff Roger C. Vann and leaders from partner organization the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti, were also joined in the meeting by Haitian cabinet members, including Paul Altidor, Haitian Ambassador to the United States and Bernice Fidélia, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE). Sophia Martelly, Haiti's first lady also participated in the meeting.
"This visit is an important step toward enhancing and expanding the long-standing relationship between the NAACP and our brothers and sisters in Haiti," stated Brock. "The NAACP has a rich history and association with Haiti. W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the Association's founders was Haitian American. In 1920, the NAACP sent James Weldon Johnson on a fact finding trip to Haiti in response to reports of the mistreatment of Haitians and suppression of self rule during the war years. Following his 1920 visit to Haiti, James Weldon Johnson published a series of articles recounting the adverse impact of US occupation of Haiti. The NAACP's efforts contributed to the evacuation of troops from Haiti.
"The work of the NAACP has a beacon of hope for many people in many countries around the world. Haiti is no exception," stated Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley. "During our visit, we heard frequently how the NAACP has offered inspiration and instruction globally for those who are committed to human rights and social justice. By deploying this delegation, the NAACP continues a journey for partnership with our Haitian siblings as they seek a safe, strong, and secure future."
The delegation also met with Simon Dieuseul Desras, President of the Senate.
During their visit, delegation members traveled through Port-au Prince to view the progress of NAACP-funded humanitarian efforts after the 2010 Earthquake that killed an estimated 220,000 people and displaced millions.
The group visited the Santo community – a Habitat for Humanity project that received a $50,000 grant from the NAACP. The NAACP funded three additional civil society projects, including an orphanage. A criterion for the project grantees was Haitian leadership. Overall, the NAACP donated $200K to Haitian civil society projects.
"We must continue to work together with our partners in organizations like the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti to ensure that the people of Haiti not only survive this tragic natural disaster but begin to thrive" stated Brock.
"Advancing quality public education is a top priority for the NAACP," stated Kamilia Landrum, who sits on the Board's Youth Work Committee. "it is important that we look into how we can advocate for the Haitian students to get the best education possible."
The Association will use the information gleaned from government officials, civil society leaders and partners to discern how to advocate for some of the issues affecting this embattled nation—including our strategic game changers of economic justice, education, health, civic engagement and criminal justice.

Rep. David Scott Honors Student Artists
Congressman David Scott will host an awards ceremony to honor all participating students in his 11th Annual Congressional High School Art Competition.
The reception will be held Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at the Arts Clayton Gallery, located at 136 South Main Street, Jonesboro, GA 30236. The public is invited to support area students and view the extraordinary exhibit of 80 student entries.
To date, Scott has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships to local student artists. This year's top five winners will receive the following awards:
• First Place - $10,000 or $3,000 per year scholarship and artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year;
• Second Place - $5,000 scholarship and artwork will hang in Congressman Scott's Washington office for one year;
• Third Place - $2,500 scholarship and artwork will hang in a prominent public gallery;
• Fourth Place - $500 scholarship and artwork will hang in Scott's Jonesboro office for one year; and
• Fifth Place – artwork will hang in Scott's Smyrna office for one year.

MARTA Rail Service to Begin at 5 a.m. for the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon, March 17
On March 17, 2013, MARTA makes it easy for runners, spectators and volunteers to sprint to the Publix Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon with rail service beginning at 5 a.m. The Marathon begins at 7 a.m.
Participants can travel conveniently to the start and finish line at Centennial Olympic Park by taking the Red or Gold lines to the Peachtree Center Station. Participants are encouraged to arrive at their station before 5 a.m. in order to catch the first train. Sunday's rail schedule is posted at www.itsmarta.com.
Customers traveling from the Blue or Green lines will transfer at Five Points rail station to any northbound train and ride one stop to the Peachtree Center rail station. For only $2.50 each way (plus a $1 charge for a permanent Breeze card), MARTA makes it easy and affordable to travel to the race. Participants are encouraged to purchase a roundtrip fare at the beginning of their trip for added convenience. Fares can be purchased with cash, credit or debit cards at all 38 rail stations.
Parking for less than 24 hours is free at all MARTA's daily parking facilities. Customers parking in the decks at Lindbergh Center station must park in MARTA designated areas and validate their parking ticket at machines inside Lindbergh station in order to receive free daily parking. Please note that MARTA has some designated lots which
charge a fee including lots at Lenox, Brookhaven, Kensington, and College Park Stations.
In addition, MARTA's Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center station provides direct access to the Publix Georgia Marathon Health & Fitness Expo at the Georgia Dome on Friday, March 15th and Saturday, March 16th.
Due to race-related street closures, MARTA buses will experience detours and delays. The following 16 bus routes will be re-routed, and in some cases, will travel to alternate rail stations. These re-routes will begin at the start of Sunday morning bus service and will continue until the end of the Marathon at 2:00 p.m.

Clark Atlanta Involved In SAAC Reads Across America
Clark Atlanta University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) joined Norcross and Grove Park Elementary Schools' faculty, staff and students to help celebrate the importance of children's literacy by participating in their "Read Across America" celebrations on Friday, March 1.
"It was an awesome experience reading to the elementary school children and participating in the event with them today," said Clark Atlanta University SAAC President Kailyn Blackmon.
The National Education Association's (NEA) "Read Across America" is the nation's largest reading celebration and an annual motivation and awareness program that encourages every child in every community to celebrate reading. Last year First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined NEA President Dennis Van Roekel at the Library of Congress to read with hundreds of local school children.
