Christmas Survey Says Naughty or Nice, Black Kids Get Gifts

New survey done by Walmart finds that AFrican American parents put their kids' gifts at the absolute top of their list, no matter their own economic situation

According to a recent survey of African American parents by Walmart, at the top of parents' agenda is making sure that there's room in the budget for their kids' gifts. In fact, the majority of African American parents agree that regardless of their economic situation, they'll make sure to stretch the budget so they can buy the right toys, on their kids' wish lists. Some other survey findings include:

• Kids are the priority this season with the majority of parents noting that buying gifts for their kids is more important than buying gifts for adults.
• Nagging definitely works! Parents surveyed revealed that nagging is the most persuasive technique for kids to get whatever toy they want for Christmas.
• Close to half of parents wait to open gifts on Christmas Day, meaning the rest give their kids a sneak on Christmas Eve.
• More than 40 percent (43 percent) of African American parents buy the same amount toys regardless of how their child has behaved over the year.
• African American parents wish there were more culturally relevant toys to give to their children. In fact, African American parents agreed the most (77 percent) with the desire for more toys that are representative of their family's race, ethnicity and/or culture.

As a Black parent, the lack of product choice in the marketplace is what drove me to create the Fearless Five, a child superhero concept, which offers positive self-imagery for young, Black children. Through our website, we currently offer a five-part picture book series, targeting pre-K to 3rd grade children and are planning to bring more products online soon. Check us out. We have a great story.
